So my husband and I have a different perspective on music. Ok, music and humor. Well, music and humor and family. Fine. We differ or just about everything but my point here is music since it is a particular passion of both of ours.

I love music, but I mostly love music as a catalyst for something else. Emotion. I don’t particularly care what type of music it is as long as I can somehow get behind it. Zach on the other hand is looking for something very different. He wants originality, creativity, complexity of lyrics, intricacy of music, and overall talent. I couldn’t care less about these things.

He fills his Ipod and computer with all the songs he loves. His pride and joy is (no not me, don’t get your hopes up) his over 11,000 song catalogue on his computer. All named and labeled with cover work and blah Blah BLAH. Really, I don’t care but I got a huge lecture about it all and was threatened if I messed anything up. I wanted to download one little CD and I get the “If you mess up my music I’ll flush Tiffany down the toilet speech. You may think Tiffany is a small child or pet, but no, she’s so much better. She’s my bracelet that I bought from Tiffany’s and I love her dearly. So much in fact that I just never downloaded anything for fear of retribution.

Zach and I love to give each other a hard time about music. Yesterday I told him one of his favorite songs sounded like Orcas talking. Even now, that makes me laugh. He however was not amused. He takes it all too seriously. Way too seriously. It makes for somewhat awkward road trips. Here’s how it was on the way back form Missouri last time:

Me: Ok, I’ll sing the main part, you sing back up. Are you ready?

I’m holding my fist like a microphone

Zach:

Me: Why do you build me up,

thrusting the microphone in Zach’s face for his turn

Zach:

Me: Buttercup baby just to let me down

again thrusting the microphone this time with a death glare

Zach:

Me: And then mess me around and then worst of all

thrust, glare, with added shoulder smack

Zach:

Me: You never call baby when you say you will

Zach:

Me: DO IT!!!!!!!!

Zach: But I love you still.

dead pan, eye’s never leaving the road, said, not sung

Me: Yay!!!!!

Since we have to go to stinky Misery for Thanksgiving I am compiling a list of CDs that we’ll take. These will all have fond memories attached and they evoke lots of emotions. Zach can start learning the lyrics now so we can improve our duets, since last time his parts were somewhat lack luster.

Garth Brooks: The Hits

garth brooks.jpgEveryone cries to Unanswered Prayers, I personally connect with Thunder Rolls (damn those cheating boyfriends), and Rodeo makes me want to bed a cowboy.

Footloose: the soundtrack

footloose.jpgBest sound track ever, period. Anyone who has dated understands Hurts So Good, single girls use I’m Holding Out For A Hero as their anthem, and how could you not want to “kick off your Sunday shoes to Footloose.

New Kids on the Block: Hangin’ Tough

nkotb.jpg Every girl who grew up during the late 80s was in love with New Kids. It was my first concert ever and yes I still know the Hanging Tough dance.

Elton John: Too Low For Zero

elton john.jpgI danced around the living room with my Mom as she belted out I’m Still Standing, I feel the pain of I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues, and I like that in Religion an alcoholic and a prostitute are saved but keep their problems.

Diane Ross and the Supremes: Every Great # 1 Hit

diane ross.jpgMy cousin used to live with us and it would be my cousin, my sister, and I as the Supremes and my Mom as Diana Ross and we’d sing and do hand motions and little dances to Stop, In The Name Of Love.

Tony Bennett: All Time Greatest Hits

tony bennett.jpgI used to have piano lessons 3 hours away, so ever single weekend we’d drive to LA and we usually listened to Tony Bennett. Just about every song on there is awesome. Smile reminds me of my Mom and Sing You Sinners always made me wonder why Christians didn’t sing and dance more. Anyone who’s loved, lost or dreams of loving or losing needs some Tony in their life.

So there it is. Soundtrack for Thanksgiving in Missouri. Truly great music if you care about passion and not music, lyrics, or talent. Seriously though, with out passion and emotion, why bother with the music anyways? It’ll just sound like Orcas talking.
